The countdown has been on for nearly 12 months and finally the first round of the inaugural BAD Boy Mowers Blown Lites Superboats Championship is little more than a week away.
After a couple of seasons on the sidelines, ASBC advocate David Satterly will be back on the water competing in what is to be the first national series for powerboat racing in many years.
The Blown Lites promise to showcase all the thrills of blown alcohol displacement racing in an ultra-competitve format due to certain restrictions on engine capacity & forced induction. Organisers have designed the rules to ensure close racing and reliability- something that is seldom seen in the current unlimited B.A.D category.
The restrictions meant Satterly needed only to change his supercharger from an 8/71 to 6/71, plus fit an Enderle 'bug' injector hat instead of his larger 'bird' that sists on top of his 8/71. This new small block combination will suit the 19 foot Everingham 'Titan' perfectly and put them right in the mix of things.
The team will have a better insight into the overall performance of the boat this weekend after they perform their first test run on Saturday.
When asked of his expectations for the racing on Saturday week, Satterly seemed to be taking a level headed approach.
"The engine will be running different compression so we don't know how it's going to go." David said.
"Obviously it's a new combination so we'll just have to wait and see."
"I'm just going out there to enjoy myself and get a feel for the new setup, I won't be out there flogging the engine and giving it a hard time."
"I can race against the unlimited boats in the other races if I want to, but I want the engine to last so I'm not really interested in chasing races."
"Some of the other entrants wont be at Berri so it gives us a chance to grab some extra points. That should give us a bit of an advantage when it's time to head over to Taree at Easter."
The series is structured so as to reward reliability, so if 'Titan' can score a couple of podium finishes at Berri & back it up with some consistent racing interstate at the following rounds, Satterly could well be in the running for the championship. As the man said himself, we'll just have to wait and see.
