Rythum (Wayne Hodgson)
Rythum is another version of the popular 21 ft hulls / ‘Blown Big Block’ combinations to throw their hat into the ring for the Showdown and what a welcome addition to the field this team is.
In my opinion, this ‘Big Black Beast’ looks every bit as impressive as any of the entries so far with a certain added ‘meanness’ about it. The highly polished Blower hat, Super Charger and massive engine block jumps out at you against the jet black hull of the Rythum boat and it doesn’t only look fantastic, it has more than enough in the ‘MUMBO’ department; don’t worry about that. In addition to the spectacular look of the boat, Wayne Hodgson, the current driver of the Rythum machine, has all of the skills required to peddle a monster such as this very quickly around a circuit boat course.
At Mildura in May, this duo was very impressive, competitive and reliable. If not for an impromptu ‘hose down’ from 2nd placed ‘Unleashed’ in the Errol Jay Final with a lap to go (after making up a lot of ground after a wild ride at the start I might add), Wayne would quite likely have joined the current Australian and Australasian champions from Mildura on the podium. Regardless the Rythum crew and boat put in constant solid performances at Mildura and have excellent form behind them going into the Showdown.
As for the Showdown, the Adelaide course should certainly suit these bigger types of boats a whole lot more than the tighter Mildura circuit did and seeing as there are quite a few teams in the Showdown field with similar Hull / Engine configurations, you would expect them to be very evenly matched. It could therefore come down to the respective Drivers and from what I have seen of Wayne Hodgson’s driving recently, he could be in for another very good weekend.
One final note…..this boat finished second to Unleashed in the Marj Watson in 2008 with Dean Gleeson driving on that occasion. Wayne Hodgson looks every bit as quick as a driver which could easily bring about a repeat performance for Rod Cooney's team at the Showdown…..perhaps even one placing better!
