TIM MAY TAKES CLUB'S HIGHEST HONOR
30th June 2009
The Adelaide Speedboat Club's outstanding performer for season 2008/2009 was Tim May who was awarded with the Peter Magor Best & Fairest Driver Award.
And hasn't Tim earned it. Winning our local competition is no easy task to begin with considering we now have some of the top boats and drivers from around the country. Agent Orange, Tuff'E'Nuff and The Real Thing have all been marked off of Tim's hit list, and it was done up against some heavily experienced drivers in Stanley, Clark and Walsh.
Stepping up to the best boats in the country takes a whole lot of courage which many of you will agree, Tim has plenty. Watching 'The Boss' fly down the straights full noise lying on its side is enough to worry onlookers, but it's all in a days racing for the South Aussie farmer.
Let's not forget his performance at the Sprint Auto Parts Dorwin Gold Cup either. Stepping up once again this time to interstate top contender Brett Sheppard in Unleashed was further testament to May's determination, and there aren't too may drivers who can run side by side with a top team race after race, and I do believe he is the only driver who has managed to outrun Sheppard to the finish on the outside line.
Talking to Tim about his awards, he was modest to say the least.
"Yeah, we did alright I suppose. It's good to get some results but I'd like to have done better."
"I'd like to be able to push harder, but I can't afford to lose my engine. We've got the combo right and we really need to look after it."
"The big guys have got the extra speed on the straights, but I can get 'em in the corners. The boat just does everything right for me."
Many spectators have come to agree that Tim would have done quite well at events such as the Marjorie Watson Trophy, and next season we may get our chance to see Tim square off against the best around the country.
"Yeah I was kicking myself this year, I could have almost made it to Mildura if I wasn't out spraying the day before" he said, looking back over his season.
"It's the best way to improve your driving, race against the top teams from around the country. They really take it to the next level."
"This years been all club racing for me, and next season I think we'll be looking at more interstate racing. We're really looking forward to the challenge."
What makes this award even sweeter is the fact it's gone to someone who could be called an 'underdog'. No big dollar sponsors or spare engines, Tim has built his own engine over a number of years collecting what parts he could, and he's simply got a fantastic combination running on song.
Well done Tim, good luck for the B.A.D Boat SHOWDOWN.
